Cancer
What is Cancer?
Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells.

Cancer Warning Signs:
1. Change in bowel and/or bladder habits 2. A sore that does not heal 3. Unusual bleeding or discharge 4. Thickening of a lump in the breast or elsewhere 5. Indigestion or difficulty swallowing 6. Obvious change in a wart or mole 7. Nagging cough or hoarseness
Cancer Prevention Plan:
1. Stop Smoking
 • Lung cancer kills more people in developed countries than any other type of cancer • Nearly all of cancers are of the lip, tongue, esophagus, and lung are directly linked to tobacco. 50 percent of bladder cancers are connected with this insidious poison. • Smoking plays a major role in heart disease. By age sixty smokers are 10 times more likely to die from a heart attack or stroke than non-smokers.
2. Eat A Healthy Diet
 • Most researchers now agree that 33 percent of all cancers could be prevented by an improved diet • Foods that are high in fat and low in fiber are most strongly linked to various types of cancers—especially stomach and colon cancer.
The American Cancer Society recommends the following:
•Eat five or more servings of fruit and vegetables each day •Choose whole grains instead of processed (refined) grains and sugar •Limit consumption or red meats, especially high-fat and processed meats •Choose foods that help maintain a healthful weight
3. No Alcohol
• Alcohol is directly related to cancer
 4. Avoid undue sun exposure • • •There are two relatively harmless types of skin cancer: Basal cell and Squamous cell that grow slowly and can be easily removed • The most dangerous form of skin cancer is Melanoma • This cancer can spread very quickly to other parts of the body • After it has spread the death rate is very high • Melanoma is believed to be caused by repeated sunburns • To protect your skin from this avoid sunlight between 10 AM and 4 PM.
5. Adopt a Physically Active Lifestyle
• Adults: Engage in at least moderate activity for 30 minutes of more on 5 or more days of the week. 1. 45 minutes or more on 5 days or more may further enhance reductions in the risk of breast and colon cancer. • Children Adolescents: Engage in 60 minutes per day of moderate to vigorous physical activity.
6. Achieve a Healthy Weight • Balance calories in (eating) with calories out (activity). • Talk to you doctor about a plan to lose weight if currently overweight or obese. • In men, the 2nd and 3rd most common cancers are of the prostate and colon. • For women, it is breast and colon cancers. 1. Nearly 50 percent of these cancers are linked to obesity (too much fat in the diet and on the body).
7. Participate in screening examinations
Breast: 1) self-exam monthly from age 20.
2) breast exam every 3 years from age 20-39,
3) breast exam every year from age 40+
• Cervix: Pelvic exam with Pap smear every year from age 18
• Skin: Self-exam once a month. Look for anything unusual.

Where do I go for more help?
This is not a “do-it-yourself” matter—you need to be well-informed and cooperate closely with a knowledgeable and concerned professional health counselor who can plan a program for you that will include an individualized dietary, exercise, and weight control plan.
